Subjected to harassment by the authorities, its representatives went underground, founded anti- government organizations and took part in the partisan movement. However, until the end of the 19th century relations between the ruling elite and the Chinese ethnic minority were a well-established system. The hostility appeared at the beginning of the 20th century along with the transformation of the Chinese community. There are a number of objective reasons explaining the changes affecting the Chinese community. These include the general increase in the number of migrants, and a growing percentage of immigrant women, and emerging Thai nationalism. In this paper, the correlation of the attitude of the kingdom government towards the local Chinese community is considered in connection with the rising level of their political involvement. The growth of national identity associated with the events in their historical homeland began to influence the political activity of the Chinese community, which, in turn, led to a rise in anti-Chinese sentiment in the ruling circles of the kingdom.
