At the first sight, the style of the novel is akin to magic realism, the well-known style of fiction due to Latin American literature with its huge impact on the emerging literatures of postcolonial Asian and African countries. But the closer look upon the poetics of the Eka Kurniawan’s text reveals the corresponding ties with guidelines of postmodernist concept of fiction. Stealing the ideas from M rquez, Eka builds them into his own postmodern narrative, and makes the return of the saduran practice from the early years of XX century — the retelling of the foreign literature set in Dutch East Indies.
