Международная научная конференция, посвященная 65-й годовщине начала изучения языков ЮВА в нашей стране Bui Thi Thao (History Department, Hue University of Education, Hue University, Vietnam, btthao@hueuni.edu.vn; thaohasp@gmail.com) THE SUNNYLANDS DECLARATION (2016) AND THE US — ASEAN RELATIONS IN EARLY DECADES OF THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY Abstract: The Sunnylands Declaration was issued after a two-day summit on February 15 and 16, 2016 in California (USA) between the U.S. and the ten member nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This is the first time the United States of America has hosted a special leaders’summit with ASEAN countries in the U.S. after nearly four decades of diplomatic relations (1977). The birth of the Sunnylands Declaration not only marks adjustment in the U.S. policy and a strong commitment of this power to Southeast Asian nations but also shows the growing role of ASEAN in complex, multifaceted changes in East Asia and Asia-Pacific. Even then, Russia (5–2016), China (11–2017) and India (1–2018) have adopted similar declarations to ASEAN, but the Sunnylands Declaration is still considered the most important. Will the changes in the U.S. foreign policy under the President Donald Trump (1–2017) and the rise of China’s influence undermine the existing the U.S. engagement with ASEAN? This paper will focus on analyzing the significance of the Sunnylands Declaration and its impact for the future of ASEAN's consensus and the US-ASEAN relations in the early decades of the 21st century. Keywords: Sunnylands Declaration, the U.S.- ASEAN Relations, impact, future.
