Spatari (Institute for Linguistic Studies, St Petersburg, dmitrserg@gmail.com , natalia.spatar@gmail.com ) THE WORD HETU/HAET IN KHMER Abstract: The report addresses the uses of  hetu/haet   ‘cause’ in Old Khmer, Middle Khmer, and Modern Khmer. It shows that the word signaling cause-consequence relations between two situations has been regularly employed in this capacity during the different stages of Khmer history. In Old Khmer and Middle Khmer, hetu could occur as a full-fledged causal conjunction and in Middle Khmer, also in a prepositional function. In Modern Khmer, it is most frequently found in the form of haet as a part of a consequence construction or a component of a compound “causal” question marker.
