Международная научная конференция, посвященная 65-й годовщине начала изучения языков ЮВА в нашей стране The CHinese Overseas in Thailand and Vietnam—Similarities and Differences 233 of Chinese immigrants to these countries happened during the second part of the 19 th —first decades of the 20 th centuries. That being the case, in Thailand the integration of members of the Chinese community for the most part of the 20 th century and in the beginning of the 21 st century as well has been going on quite successfully, Thailand has not seen any significant instances of withdrawal of the Chinese Overseas from it. The immigration of the Chinese people to Thailand has been, first and foremost, influenced by the economic necessities of the immigrants themselves and by the interests of certain members of the local Chi- nese diaspora, who sought to recruit their compatriots for the sake of further development of enterprises, which they owned. It is important to state, that the Thai government, for the most part, never intention- ally attracted neither the Chinese labor, nor the capital to arrive in the country, however, at the same time, it never really effectively tried to hinder their arrival. If one looks at Vietnam in an attempt to figure out the causes of the formation of the Chinese community there during the 20 th century, the situation there appears to be somewhat different from Thailand. The immigration of the Chinese to Vietnam during the colonial period of its history (before March 1945) was promoted by the beginning of the process of economic modernization, which was been carried out by the French colonial authorities. They were the ones most interested in attracting labor and capital resources of the Chinese Overseas at that time. From the financial point of view, the Chinese Overseas also benefitted from the cooperation with representatives of the colonial administration. The majority of immigrants from China to during the first half of the 20 th century arrives to Vietnam after having signed labor contracts with French recruiters. Perhaps, this pattern or mode of initial immigration eventual turned out to be one of the reasons, that in the history of Vietnam during the 20 th century several distinct periods can be traced, during which massive exoduses of the Chinese people fromVietnam have occurred: in the years of the Japanese occu- pation of Vietnam (September 1940 — August 1945), in the years of the First (December 1946 — July 1954) and the Second (1957–1975) IndochinaWars and particularly during the latter half of the 1970, when
