Moskalev (St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg, p.moskalev@spbu.ru ) THE CHINESE OVERSEAS IN THAILAND AND VIETNAM — SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES Abstract: Thailand and Vietnam are among the leading countries in Southeast Asia in terms of area size, population density and among the most dynamically developing countries as well. Throughout the centuries in both of these countries numerous Chinese diasporas have been formed. The Chinese Overseas have become integral members of the local societies and have significantly influenced the development of various aspects of social life in these countries. At the same time, the Chinese Overseas in many aspects came to hold quite distinct positions in each of the aforementioned states. The report is dedicated to the analysis of some causes of differences and similarities in the positions of the Chinese Overseas in the Thai and Vietnamese histories. The positions of the Chinese Overseas in the historical development of Thailand and Vietnam, at least during the 20 th and the beginning of the 21 st centuries, were significantly different, there were, however, some similar traits as well. These circumstances were influenced largely by the specific conditions, which occurred in these countries, as well as by the specifics of their international relations with China.
